The United State of America has carried out its first two airstrikes against the Islamic State fighters in Somalia, report coming from US security official.

Minimum of six missiles landed in Buqa, a village surrounded with mountain in the northern state of Puntland, said a Somali security official.

The attack may have targeted senior leaders of ISIS, which has a highly developing presence in the region.

The mayor of nearby Qandala town, Jama Mohamed, attested to the attack, which he said had terrified locals and sent them fleeing with their animals.

The US official, speaking anonymously, said an investigation is ongoing to see how many militants had been killed.

US has previously carried out drone strikes against al Qaeda-linked al Shabab group in Somalia, which has a much bigger presence in the country, but this is the first against Islamic State fighters.

The islamic terrorist sect ISIS claimed a suicide bombing that happened in Puntland in May that claimed four lives – thought to be the first time ISIS has claimed an attack in Somalia.
