Denis Suarez is determined to stay and fight for a place at Barcelona, despite interest from Chelsea in the Premier League.

Suarez, 24, has been surplus to requirements for the Catalans since the start of the 2018-19 season.

Having made 27 appearances in all competitions last term, the former Villarreal man has been restricted to just two so far this campaign, as the arrivals of Arthur and Arturo Vidal have added further competition in the Barca engine room. The situation has led to understandable frustration from the player, who  Goal  understands had been promised a bigger role in the first team by coach Ernesto Valverde at the end of 2017-18.

But the same sources consulted by Goal   assure that he is still convinced he can make it at Camp Nou, despite failing to make a single Liga appearance in the season to date.

Denis had the chance to pursue his career elsewhere over the summer.

Maurizio Sarri, a confirmed admirer of the midfielder since his tenure at Napoli, pushed Chelsea to make overtures which ultimately proved unsuccessful.

An unfortunate injury pre-season, however, left the player lacking match fitness and form when the campaign got underway, while young Brazilian Arthur jumped at the chance to establish himself instantly in Valverde's starting line-up.Denis is considered a further attacking alternative at Barca, placing him in competition also with Malcom and Munir, two other squad members who have been used sparingly.

Even that pair have seen more game time than the Spaniard, however, leading to no little consternation despite Valverde's assurances that "everyone might have a chance over the course of the season."

But he will not be rushed into a decision. Suarez has a year and a half left on his contract and intends to see it out until the end, less as a challenge to Valverde but rather a show he is determined to succeed at Barca.

If Valverde choose to leave at the end of the season, he will have a new chance to impress and prove he is good enough to star at the Blaugrana.
